Use of a stainless steel tube flash boiler lets you deliver .75 GPM strike water @ 168 degrees, superheated steam for wort heating, and 175 degree sparge water from same boiler. Boiler steam capacity is sufficient to raise 1 GPM flow 60 degrees permitting steps from 120's to 150's in time needed for liquid exchange in mash tun. Time to dough in is under 5 minutes from cold start and 5 gallon strike volume, strike water hits temp in about 45 seconds after ignition, stable in 60 seconds under PID control from software. This system is built so no plumbing is moved unless boil kettle or mash tun are removed, all liquid control is by automatic valves, and gas flow is controlled by mass flow controllers with signals from PLC hardware. Automation platform is Opto 22 G1 series PLC hardware controlled by either Java or C# applications, industry standard output flow, temperature, pressure transmitters, and proportional control ball valves were used for measurement and process control. Cooling is provided by tandem water chillers with ethanol antifreeze mixture at 32 degrees, 50 L reserve tank provides capacity for wort chilling.
